About Antibiotics
Antibiotics are a type of medicine that can be used to treat bacterial infections. Bacteria and viruses are two different types of organisms and cannot be treated with the same medicine. Antibiotics target the cell structure of bacteria. Viruses, however, have no cell, and so antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections, which must be treated with antiviral medications such as Tamiflu.
Bacteria can eventually adapt to antibiotics and develop resistance. Because of this, it is important to utilize these drugs carefully. The more we misuse antibiotics, the less effective they are at treating dangerous illnesses.
