Sep3 Stupid Quote of the Day
I found this little gem while checking BlogLines this morning…
Entertainment Weekly: What do you think is the larger social commentary of The Brave One, which in some ways plays as a straight-up Dirty Harry revenge movie?
Jodie Foster: Here’s my commentary: I don’t believe that any gun should be in the hand of a thinking, feeling, breathing human being. Americans are by nature filled with rage-slash-fear. And guns are a huge part of our culture. I know I’m crazy because I’m only supposed to say that in Europe. But violence corrupts absolutely. By the end of this, her transformation is complete. ”F— all of you, now I’m just going to kill people with my bare hands.” [source]
Excellent idea! Let’s give all the guns to the unthinking, unfeeling, breathing human beings instead!
Granted, I know that’s not what she meant. Things would be a lot better off if no one had any guns. I’ll give her that much. Here’s the problem: I don’t know about Ms. Foster, but I don’t live in a John Lennon song. I live in reality. And in reality, the bad guys will always find a way to get guns if they want them so badly.

Don’t you mean unthinking, unfeeling, unbreathing? Inverting only part of her statement is unfair, methinks. At any rate, arming the undead is an especially bad idea. ;)

I disagree, because that would be implying that the three traits are inseparable. You can be thinking and breathing, yet unfeeling, or feeling and breathing, yet unfeeling, or even breathing, and yet unfeeling or unthinking. Her wording makes it possible to interpret it as, “If a human being is not thinking AND feeling AND breathing, then you can give them a gun.” Now, as I said, I know that’s not what she meant, and as such, my inverting the statement was simply a joke, nothing more.
Zombies With Guns could make for a very interesting movie.

Gun control, the big debate. I just saw a movie where this one kid took his gun from his parents’ basement and shot his parents and his brother. His anger might have boiled over if he didn’t have a gun with access.
But I’m not keen on this debate.
Btw, I’ve been wondering for a while now, how do you get Del.icio.us link posts to display in your rss feed but not the blog itself?

That kid’s parents were stupid to store their gun in such a way that their child had access to it. I certainly don’t advocate irresponsibility. I’d just rather have a gun in my hand if I’m faced with a guy like Seung-Hui Cho, the student responsible for the Virginia Tech Massacre.
I use WordPress’ sidebar widgets to put my Del.icio.us links on my sidebar, and apparently it also adds them to your feed.

I hate guns and I used to be 100% anti-gun but, now I’m not so sure. I like our 2nd amendment and the very idealistic notion of having the right to protect yourself and your family from terrible people but, I don’t think that schools would be much safer if everyone was “packing heat.” That would just make the situation more dangerous.
But, anyway, stupid stupid stupid quote. I’m an American and I’m NOT naturally filled with rage/fear. Pissh.
